Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine to Partner with UHAS

The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), UK has conferred with Senior Management of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho (UHAS). The discussions between the two institutions were centered on the possibility of a partnership to run a postgraduate programme in Global Health .

Founded in 1898, LSTM has specific area of collaboration which is its new flagship programme in Master of Science in Global Health. The programme is envisioned to decrease diseases through research, education and building capacity; thereby contributing to the Global Health agenda articulated in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Dr. Martha Chinuoya, a Senior Lecturer at LSTM and a Global Health lead of the team disclosed that, the Master of Science in Global Health is part of the strategic plan developed by LSTM to ensure that graduates are ready for the field of work. The programme, according to her, is developed in modules and structured to meet the requirement of students and it is expected to run between two (2) to five (5) years depending on the schedule of the student.

Professor John Owusu Gyapong, the Vice-Chancellor of UHAS in his welcome address gave an elaborative background presentation on UHAS and also seized the opportunity to enumerate a number of structural developments that are expected to commence next year.

Professor Phil Padfield, the Dean of Education at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) also made a presentation on his Institution. According to him, LSTM supports cutting edge research and is interested in creating new partnerships with other universities. He lauded the flagship Vocational Training programme of UHAS since it gives practical experience sessions to students.

Mr. Michael Lurie, the Director of International Education and Knowledge Exchange, on his part said LSTM designs programmes as a reflection of what it stands for. He further indicated that LSTM already has subsisting partnership with a number of public universities in Ghana.

Among the delegates from Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) were Dr. Martha Chinuoya, a Senior Lecturer at LSTM and a Global Health lead, Mr. Michael Lurie, Director of International Education and Knowledge Exchange and Professor Phil Padfield, Dean of Education.

UHAS was represented by the Vice Chancellor, Professor John Owusu Gyapong, Acting Director of the Institute of Health Research, Professor Margaret Gyapong, the Director of Academic Affairs, Mrs. Lucy Brempong-Ayeh, Deans and other Senior Members.
