His Excellency Admiral (Rtd.) Ibok-Ete Ibas, High Commissioner of Nigeria to Ghana, as part of his first trip outside Accra since his appointment in March 2021, paid a working visit to UHAS where he was received by Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Harry Tagbor and members of the University’s Senior Management.

Professor Tagbor gave an overview of the University, highlighting the growing numbers of Nigerian faculty and students at UHAS. He recounted the contributions of Nigerian staff, and singled out for mention Professor Clement Adeleke Adebajo and Professor Oluwaseun Omotayo, who were instrumental in the establishment of their assigned Schools of Pharmacy and Sports and Exercise Medicine, respectively. He added that UHAS has attracted many international faculty members and is dedicated to creating a diverse and inclusive work environment for all its international employees.

Admiral Ibas said his visit to UHAS is the first he has embarked on outside Accra since he was posted to Ghana last March, and expressed appreciation to UHAS Management on behalf of the Nigerian Government for “hosting Nigerian employees and students.” He also paid tribute to the late President John Evans Atta Mills for his vision in establishing a unique university with the sole objective of training health and allied science professionals; and commended the Chinese Government for the construction of the School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences.

Mr. Gambo Yusuf Hamza, Deputy High Commissioner, Mr. Sylvanus Dauda, Minister/Head of Consular Unit and Madam Aisha Shehu Haliru, Head of Chancery were part of the entourage. Mr. Gambo Yusuf Hamza appealed to UHAS Management to reexamine its tuition fee payment policy to position UHAS to attract more students from Nigeria. He also appealed to the university to consider absorbing the cost of obtaining work and residence permits for the Nigerian and other foreign employees, as is commonly done elsewhere.
