Mr Yaw Osafo-Maafo, the Senior Minister, has described the establishment of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho (UHAS) as a social project that has to be provided with all the needed support. According to him “UHAS is a huge but necessary project.” He said UHAS as an institution is capable of spearheading the solution to Ghana’s social problems which he described as education, health and security. He also called on the leadership of UHAS to play a leading role in unravelling the rich hidden history of Ghanaian traditional medicine. He was impressed with the kind of human resource the University has been able to assemble within the relatively short period of its existence.
Mr Yaw Osafo-Maafo said these while on a day’s working visit to the University to familiarise himself with the health oriented institution.
Professor John Owusu Gyapong, the Vice Chancellor of UHAS, used the occasion to reiterate his call on government for an expedited action on the conversion of the Volta Regional Hospital to Ho Teaching Hospital by forming the Ho Teaching Hospital Board sooner to enable the Hospital and the University attract much needed consultants and other specialists for the training of UHAS students. He also brought to the attention of the Senior Minister the need to speed up work on the number of ongoing projects within the University so as to position UHAS in readiness for the graduates of the government’s flagship programme; FREE SHS.
Dr Sena Kpeglo, the Registrar of UHAS further called on the Senior Minister to keep UHAS in mind at every level of decision-making within the government.
Present at the brief meeting were Deans, Directors and other employees of the University.
