The School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONAM) in collaboration with a team from Yonsei University organized a Health Fair for the people of Awudome Avenui on Thursday, January 31, 2019.
The Health Fair was part of a 3 day School Camp which was mostly patronized by pupils from Avenui Methodist Primary School, Avenui Camp Methodist Primary School, Avenui E. P. Primary School and people of the Avenui community in the Ho West district, Volta Region.
Participants were taken through physical examination which includes Vision check, Dental check, BMI, Blood Pressure and Alcohol Tolerance level. The Pupils were also taken through simple emergency resuscitation procedures in case of emergencies. The procedure which is healthier than the old procedure of mouth to mouth resuscitation has been approved by the Ghana Health Service.
Professor Euisook Kim, an Emeritus Professor at the Yonsei University and Chairman of the Global Korean Nursing Foundation (GKNF) was impressed with the hospitality shown them by the Avenui community. She said, the foundation is part of the seven Universities in South Korea and the team to Ghana comprises 17 students from these institutions.
According to Professor Kim, the students are second and third year nursing students who have interest to have a global nursing experience. She also mentioned that, the students had experiences at the Regional Hospital, CHPS and also Community home visitations.
Professor Ernestina Donkor, the Dean of School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONAM) said the collaboration between the two institutions is a step in the right direction since it presents opportunities to both students and the institutions to serve the community together.
She also pointed out that the project will further deepen the relationship between SONAM and the Awudome Avenui community since students are already posted to the community for Vocational Training (VT).
The day’s activity was brought to an end with a grand durbar of the chiefs and people of the Avenui community with the Yonsei-UHAS team. The Dufia of Awudome Avenui, Togbe Adzesi-DzagaⅥ in his speech stated that Avenui is endowed with large tracks of agricultural land and the community is looking out for partners to help develop their agricultural potentials in order to create employment for the teaming youth. The climax of the durbar saw Emeritus Professor Euisook Kim enstooled as a queen mother of Awudome Avenui Traditional Area with the stool name Mama Efua Nutefeworla I as a sign of appreciation for the assistance given to the people of Avenui.
Present at the programme were Professor Prudence Mwini-Nyaledzigbor, the immediate past Dean of SONAM, Professor Francis Zotor, Director of International Programs and other members of Faculty. The delegation from Yonsei University was led by Professor Hyeonkyeony Leo, President of GKNF and Miss Eunji Kim, the Project Manager.
