The Human Resource Directorates of University of Health and Allied Science, Ho (UHAS) in collaboration with the Transport Unit of the University on Wednesday, 18th and Thursday, 19th July, 2018 held a two-day workshop for all drivers of the University at the Main Campus, Sokode-Lokoe, Ho on the theme ‘The Role of the University Driver in Achieving UHAS Objectives’.
Opening the workshop, Professor Seth Owusu-Agyei, the Pro-Vice Chancellor of UHAS stated that the training which was organised as part of in-service training for UHAS staff sought to equip drivers of UHAS with the requisite knowledge and also help them improve on their attitude towards work. He advised the participants to take the training serious in order to build capacity and improve on their driving skills, since drivers constitute a very significant aspect of the University.
Dr. William Vidogah, Director, Works and Physical Development Directorate of UHAS, in a message, indicated that the rationale behind the workshop is to ensure that UHAS puts nothing short of Professional Drivers on the road. He related that as a professional driver, one is expected to conduct basic maintenance of one’s vehicle every morning before setting it in motion and urged all participants to see the training as an opportunity to learn more and work best.
Mr. David Adzovie, Director, Human Resource Directorate of UHAS, also delivered a brief message in which he explained that driving is risky no matter who is behind the wheel and it is the responsibility of the University to recruit professional drivers, retain and develop them to perform efficiently in line with the University’s corporate objectives and road users’ safety. He said the training offers resources to build the skills drivers need to combat the issues they face each day.
The Head of UHAS Security Unit, Senior Warrant Officer (Rtd.) James Ocloo on his part said the security of life and property starts with the individual and among other things urged the participants to be Security conscious at all times.
The facilitators at the workshop were Mr. Samuel Lodonu, Regional Manager, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Ho, Solomon Amo, Senior Technical Engineer, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Ho, Chief Superintendent Victor Oduro Abrokwa, Police Regional Headquarters, Ho, Chief Inspector Victor Kwame Duvor, Police Regional Headquarters, Ho and Ms. Joana Fafa Ayer, Planning Officer, Road Safety Commission, Ho.
Topics treated include Basic Vehicle Maintenance, Driving Ethics and Human Relations, Road Traffic and Driving Regulation Act and Defensive Driving Technics and Risk Perception.
Dr. Cynthia Sena Kpeglo, the Registrar of UHAS used her turn to expressed the University’s gratitude to the facilitators and urged the participating drivers to put knowledge and skills obtained to effective use for the benefit of society and for their own personal development.
