The University of Health and Allied Sciences held a Congregation ceremony for 337 graduate and post graduate students from the Schools of Allied Health Sciences, Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery, and Public Health on Saturday, 26th of January, 2019 at the Cedi Auditorium, Main Campus, Sokode - Lokoe. 16 Students of the Leeds Beckett University were also graduated since UHAS serves as a host for its MSc. in Public Health (Health Promotion) program.
Welcoming the graduands and invited guests to the ceremony, Chairman of the University Council, His Lordship Justice Victor Jones Mawulom Dotse acknowledged the importance of the Congregation. He explained that, the second session is intended to cater for students who completed the sandwich programme. He also said, the Congregation ensures that all deserving students graduate in the year in which they completed their academic work.
The Chairman of the Governing Council concluded his address by wishing graduands all the best and success in their future endeavours.
The Vice -Chancellor of the University, Professor John Owusu Gyapong in his speech, congratulated the graduands. He outlined the University's Strategic Plan, Policies and a detailed report on its yearly activities: admission requirements, research innovation, introduction of new programmes, infrastructural progress and new institutional partnerships to ensure quality teaching and learning.
Concerning updates on the Ministry of Education’s intention to introduce a Centralised Admission and Placement System (CAPS), Professor Gyapong informed the gathering that Vice Chancellors Ghana (VCG) has consented to this arrangement since it’s the norm in most developed countries. He added that, admission of students shall be the sole prerogative of the Universities and not the Ministry of Education.
Mr. Paul Asare Ansah, immediate past Director of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority and now Technical Advisor to the Minister of Transport who was the Guest Speaker admonished the graduands to have a strong sense of Humility, Honesty, Professionalism, Patriotism and the fear of God.
Ms. Veronica Ahortor, a Midwifery graduate was the valedictorian for the congregation .
