On Saturday February 18, 2023, the 2022/2023 batch of 1,775 students were duly matriculated by the university into the Schools of Allied Health Sciences, Basic and Biomedical Sciences, Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery, Pharmacy, Sports and Exercise Medicine, and the Fred N. Binka School of Public Health.

Two sessions were held concurrently at the Main and Hohoe campuses. Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Harry Tagbor led a delegation of Senior Members to officiate the session at Binka School, which is on the Hohoe campus.

Mr. William Dennis Kwesi Sarpong from the School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences, the first student to register at the Main Campus, reading a speech on behalf of his colleague freshmen, said, “We are privileged to be in this vibrant university solely dedicated to health and research to train us to be health professionals, who will tackle various health issues in our country and beyond.” He outlined some infrastructural challenges the freshers are already facing and appealed to the government and other stakeholders to assist the young, fast-growing public university. He, all the same, encouraged his mates to give their best and to never give up.

Speaking on behalf of the Binka School’s 338 undergraduate and 36 post-graduate matriculants, Ms. Bernice Adelaide Ayer said they would do their best to abide by the tenets that make UHAS a preeminent university. She also expressed hope that the University would pay more attention to the infrastructural as well as teaching and learning challenges, such as poor network connectivity, long distances between student hostels and classrooms, and insufficient furniture, among other issues.

In Vice Chancellor Prof. Lydia Aziato’s speech to all the matriculants, she entreated them to be guided by the four ethos of UHAS, which are: excellence, integrity, innovation, and service and care. She told them, “Remember you are our ambassadors and pride during your studentship and even after you have graduated.”

The VC mentioned that, “This is an opportunity of a lifetime and so I urge you to embrace it wholeheartedly to achieve your goals. Strive to achieve excellence by developing critical thinking skills and maintaining the right balance between your academic and social life.”

Responding to the concern of the freshers about infrastructure, Prof. Aziato assured them that the university is poised to improve the current environment, and various strategies are underway to develop new infrastructure.

Present at the ceremony were the Registrar, Ms. Yaa Amankwaa Opuni, deans and directors, heads of department, faculty and staff.
