As part of their three week study tour abroad programme, a fifteen (15) member delegation from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, United States of America paid a working visit to the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho (UHAS).
Dr. Cynthia Sena Kpeglo, Registrar of UHAS, in her welcome message entreated the visiting students to enjoy their short stay in Ghana and work hard towards achieving their goals and aspirations.
Mr. Anthony Asempah, Head of Public Affairs Unit, briefed the delegation on the vision, mission and aims of UHAS. He said UHAS has a compulsory Vocational Training Programme (VTP) where students spend eight weeks (8) of each long vacation for internship in health facilities to transform their theoretical lessons into practical realities. He asserted that the programme, which is a flagship of the University, has since 2013 posted students to communities where they are expected to eventually serve after graduation.
Mr. Asempah further stated that through the community based training, UHAS has over the last six (6) years of its establishment built good relationship with the leadership of communities across the Volta Region of Ghana and beyond. He added that the University has succeeded in establishing very healthy working relation with the clinics, hospitals, CHPS compounds, health directorates and local government sectors in Ghana.
The Head of Public Affairs Unit summed up with an appeal to University of Wisconsin to collaborate with UHAS in the areas of research, exchange programmes for both faculty members and students in the near future. Dr. Mary Crave, the leader of the delegation and a senior lecturer with the School of Human Ecology, University of Wisconsin-Madison, was pleased with the warm reception offered to her and the students during the tour. She added that the health of every country’s populace is an essential component for socio-economic development and therefore encouraged the Management of UHAS to continue in the effort to strengthen the University’s curriculum and programmes to enhance the quality of students UHAS trains.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison tour programme was organized in collaboration with Seek to Save Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organization and Volta Range Travel Consult.
Mr. Baffour Gyem Darkwa, Junior Assistant Registrar in the Public Affairs Unit (UHAS), Mrs. Rosemary Agbefu, Junior Assistant Registrar in the International Programmes Directorate (UHAS), Mr. Papa Peter Kwame Kpodo, a Program Coordinator for Volta Range Travel Consult, Madam Commend Akpeloo, Executive Director of the Seek to Save Foundation, Ho and Miss Muniratu Nuhu, a Field Officer, Seek to Save Foundation were present at the brief ceremony.
