Prof John Gyapong, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho (UHAS) hosted a team of Professors from Yonsei University in South Korea led by Prof. Joshua Sir.
Among the issues discussed during the meeting were ways to strengthen teaching and research collaboration between UHAS and Yonsei University. A number of areas of collaboration between UHAS and Yonsei University were identified, some of which are capacity building in both teaching and research, faculty exchange and restructuring the UHAS Vocational Training programme (one of the flagship programs in UHAS) by learning from the Korean New-Village Movement model, where the programme benefits both students and the community.
It was agreed that faculties from Yonsei University will visit UHAS to learn at first hand practices relating to Ghana as well as providing opportunities for UHAS faculties to be at Yonsei University for short-term trainings. Yonsei University will also in the near future grant PhD scholarship opportunities to UHAS faculties to enable them upgrade and build upon their individual capacities. There will also be the opportunity to train UHAS ICT staff in ICT for Health programmes and effective management of e-learning platforms. It was further related that the Korean Ministry of Education has agreed to support UHAS with about $400,000.00 for the provision of mobile health centres.
Present at the collaborative meeting were the Vice Chancellor of UHAS, Prof John Gyapong (the host), the Registrar (Dr. Sena Kpeglo), the Acting Director of International Programmes in UHAS (Professor Francis Zotor) as well as deans, directors and and selected staff from the Schools of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing & Midwifery. Also in attendance were the UHAS Vocational Training Programme coordinators.
