Dr. Mahamudu Ayamba Ali is the Director of Quality Assurance at the University of Health and Allied Sciences, effective August 1, 2023. He is a urological surgeon and a human anatomist in the School of Medicine, UHAS, where he serves as a senior lecturer and Head of the Department of Basic Medical Sciences (comprising anatomy, physiology and medical biochemistry). He has been teaching anatomy and surgery in the following Schools of UHAS: School of Medicine (SOM), School of Basic Biomedical Science (SBBS) and School of Allied Health Sciences (SAHS). He is also a consulting urologist for Ho Teaching Hospital (HTH) and the Margaret Marquart Catholic Hospital (MMCH), Kpando.
Education
He started his basic medical education at the university of Ghana medical school where he also proceeded to pursue the Masters of Philosophy in human anatomy. He obtained his membership in surgery from both the Ghana College of Surgeons and the West Africa College of Surgeons and a fellowship in surgery, urology option from the Ghana College of Surgeons working in Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
Work Experience
Dr. Ali held several positions prior to UHAS. He did the first year of housemanship at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) departments of Medicine, and Obstetrics Gynaecology, and the second house job at the Presbyterian Hospital, Agogo. He did his Residency at the department of Surgery, Korle-Bu. He was a surgeon in general at the Margaret Marquart Catholic Hospital (MMCH) and head of surgical department; Senior Residency, Department of Surgery, Urology Unit, KBTH; Surgeon and Urologist, MMCH, Kpando (2016); and served briefly as a surgeon and Acting Medical Director at the Catholic Hospital, Anfoega.
Memberships
He is a member of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA); the Ghana Association of Urological Surgeons (GAUS); and a founding member and steering committee executive of the Anatomical Society of Ghana (ANSoG).
Research and Publications
Dr. Ali’s areas of research interest include: Immunological Interventions to prostatic diseases; Immunological markers to early bladder cancers; Congenital anomalies in the urinary system. His publications include: Tradition medicines and alternative practices in the management of prostate disease in southern Ghana (published); A rare anatomical variation of the termination of right and left cephalic vein (published); Pelvimetry of Ghanaian women in reproductive age (Master’s thesis); Antibiotic resistance in adult urologic patients (fellowship thesis).
