HeFRA Strengthens Collaboration with UHAS to Advance Healthcare Regulation and Training

March 18, 2026

The Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA), led by the Registrar, Dr. Winfred Korletey Baah, has paid a working visit to the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho to assess facilities and explore avenues for collaboration in healthcare delivery, research and training.

The visit brought together UHAS management, led by Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Frank Edwin and HeFRA officials to deliberate on the development of the University’s simulation centre and its potential role in supporting medical education, healthcare services and research in Ghana and beyond.

Welcoming the delegation, the Registrar of UHAS, Ms. Yaa Amankwaa Opuni, expressed appreciation for the engagement and affirmed the University’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery through the establishment of a fully functional medical centre on campus. She noted that the facility would serve students, staff and surrounding communities, while also providing hands-on training opportunities for future health professionals.

Professor Edwin highlighted UHAS’ investment in simulation laboratories and specialized facilities designed to equip students with practical skills in controlled settings. He emphasized that such infrastructure enhances readiness for real-world clinical practice and underscores the importance of research and data in shaping effective healthcare systems. He added that collaboration with HeFRA would generate evidence to inform policy decisions and improve service delivery nationwide.

Dr. Baah commended UHAS for its efforts to establish a medical centre and assured the University of HeFRA’s support in ensuring regulatory compliance. He noted that the centre would ease pressure on existing health facilities in the Volta Region and improve access to healthcare services. He further expressed HeFRA’s interest in partnering with UHAS in health systems research, data management, healthcare training and infection prevention and control.

According to Dr. Baah, HeFRA collects substantial healthcare data annually and collaboration with UHAS researchers would enhance its analysis and utilization to strengthen Ghana’s health system. He added that the UHAS Medical Centre could serve as a training hub for healthcare workers in infection prevention, hospital management and health information systems.

The visit forms part of HeFRA’s ongoing stakeholder engagement efforts aimed at ensuring regulatory compliance while fostering partnerships that enhance healthcare delivery, training and research.

Also present at the meeting were Arch. Ruth Xorladem Ayittey, Director of UHAS Works and Physical Development Directorate; Assistant Registrar Ofoe Gator Kugblenu, Head of Protocol and Passages at UHAS Public Affairs Directorate; other members of University Management; and the HeFRA delegation.
