UHAS Strengthens Global Nursing Ties with UMass Worcester Exchange

March 18, 2026

The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Ho, Volta Region, Ghana welcomed a delegation of faculty and students from the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Worcester Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing from March 6–13, 2026, as part of a week-long academic exchange programme.

The initiative, hosted by UHAS School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONAM), was designed to deepen academic collaboration while offering visiting students firsthand exposure to Ghana’s healthcare system.

During the visit, the UMass team participated in a range of academic, clinical and community-based activities. They toured UHAS’ training facilities, engaged in simulation exercises at the University’s Simulation Centre and joined clinical training sessions at health facilities within the Ho Municipality. The programme also included cultural immersion, highlighted by a vibrant welcome performance from the UHAS Cultural Troupe.

At a dinner meeting, UHAS Vice Chancellor Prof. Lydia Aziato encouraged the visiting team to continue supporting the nursing profession through collaborative initiatives. The UMass team lead, Dr. Akwesi Duah, expressed satisfaction with the exchange and pledged to sustain the partnership.

The Registrar of UHAS, Ms. Yaa Amankwaa Opuni, emphasized the importance of international exposure for students, noting that such collaborations enrich academic experiences and foster community health contributions. The UHAS-SONAM Dean, Prof. Peter Adatara called for expanding the partnership to include student exchange programmes and joint academic projects.

The delegation, alongside UHAS-SONAM faculty and students, extended their impact beyond the University by providing health education and services to the Adaklu Wumenu community. They also donated medical items to the Adaklu Wumenu CHPS compound and to UHAS-SONAM to support student training.

This exchange marks another milestone in UHAS commitment to building global partnerships that advance nursing education and healthcare delivery.
