About The Office Of Student Affairs
The mandate of the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) is to collaborate with diverse professionals to coordinate student activities and prepare students for life beyond their stay on UHAS campus. Our students are also guided to establish lifelong alumni relationships with the university.
To achieve our mandate, we provide a cohesive, inclusive, and personalized approach to coordinate student activities encompassing the various aspects of academic and intellectual development, social and emotional life, and the refinement of cultural, political, and sporting interests.
We have at heart integrity, efficiency, community, and creativity as our core values. Our strategic operational framework is hinged on engaging with our students while recognizing and supporting the excellent work of our staff who guarantee that the best students are produced.
We help sustain, support, and create multiple student groups within which our students can learn and develop. We also ensure a smooth flow of exchanges between staff and students to help students develop graduate attributes and become employable.
The OSA at UHAS oversees the functioning of the following Units as mandated in the statutes of the University: Student Representative Council and other student groups, Hostel Management and Sports.
Student Representative Council (SRC)
The SRC is the official mouthpiece of students. Its objective is to promote the welfare of students and serve as a liaison between students and the university. Our Office works closely with the SRC and other student associations to promote students’ welfare through the following:
1. Encouraging the development of a student culture that encourages the exercise of leadership, respect for diversity and the traditions of the University, and responsibility for personal actions.
2. Providing leadership to all bodies and activities that promote the well-being of students of the University including the SRC.
3. Resolution of conflicts between students.
4. Overseeing the management of dues and other levies collected by the SRC and student groups from students or on behalf of students.
5. Facilitating financial aid to students.
6. Providing counselling (academic and non-academic) to students.
7. Fostering alumni relationships with the university.
Other Student Groups
The UHAS Debate Society
The UHAS Debate Society is a powerhouse of young UHAS talents, consistently achieving remarkable feats in debate and public speaking. The Society won the prestigious title of Champions of the African Nations Debate League 2023 and secured the coveted position of first runner-up at the Pan African Universities Debate Championship 2023. These victories solidified the Society’s position as Africa's Best Debating University in the 2023 Africa Top Universities Debate Championship. However, the UHAS took the third position in the 2024 Africa Top Universities Debate Championship because some of the best contestants had graduated. The UHAS Debate Society aimed to represent Ghana at the World Universities Debate Championship (WUDC) in Panama in December 2024 but plans failed due to the unavailability of funds.
The UHAS Debate Society is committed to developing critical thinkers and effective communicators who will serve as the cornerstones of innovation and societal progress in the near future. The Society empowers young Ghanaian students through debate, public speaking, and poetry, honing their critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and expressive abilities.
Halls / Hostel Of Residence
To foster stronger integration and social cohesion among students, OSA ensures that all students who are admitted into the university are assigned a Hall of residence. In the near future, every student will be affiliated to a hall, providing a lifelong identity to students. OSA coordinates student residential matters through our warm and friendly Hall Tutors, Hall Administrators, and Hall Assistants.
We also liaise with the Security, Estate, and Maintenance Units to ensure safety and comfort with the use of university facilities.
Sports And Recreation
OSA currently coordinates all university sports activities. There is a Sports Unit manned by sports coaches who raise and train teams to compete in various local, national, and international games such as the Vice Chancellor’s Woezor games, Inter-University Cross-Country competition, Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) games, West African University games, and many others.
