The Chief Executive Officer of Hohoe Municipal Assembly, Honourable Prosper Kumi hosted a University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) Hohoe Campus Development Stakeholders meeting on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, marking a significant step towards the development of the main site of the Hohoe Campus which is situated at Fodome-Helu. The engagement which aimed at galvanizing expedited action towards the development of the University at the Fodome Site brought together key stakeholders including the Chairman of UHAS Governing Council, Professor Kodzo Gavua, Vice Chancellor of UHAS, Professor Lydia Aziato, Right Wing Chief of Gbi / Divisional Chief of Gbi-Bla, Togbe Buami IX (representing the Paramount Chief of Gbi, Togbega Gabusu VII), Divisional Chief of Fodome-Agbesia, Togbe Adze II (representing Paramount Chief of Fodome, Togbega Gbedegbleme Akpatsa II)
The Hohoe Campus of the University comprises the incubating site of the Fred N. Binka School of Public Health (FNBSPH), being the Onchocerciasis Research Centre (OCRC) within the Volta Regional Hospital-Hohoe and the main site, located at Fodome-Helu.
In his remarks, Honourable Kumi expressed his appreciation to all stakeholders for the work done so far on the UHAS Hohoe Campus project. He noted that education remains a key priority for him since assuming office and emphasised his commitment to supporting the growth of tertiary institutions within the Municipality.
Professor Lydia Aziato on her part, among other things, expressed her heartfelt appreciation to the MCE for initiating the engagement, describing it as the first of its kind concerning developments at the Fodome Site since she assumed office four years ago.
The Dean of UHAS Fred N. Binka School of Public Health (FNBSPH), Professor Frank Baiden, gave a brief history of the school which was commenced in 2013. He outlined its humble beginning, its notable achievements so far and highlighted its future prospects, which he said were being constrained by inadequate lecture halls and student accommodation, due to the slow pace of work at the main site of the Campus at Fodome.
The Director of UHAS Works and Physical Development, Architect Ruth Xorla Ayitey, provided a brief overview of measures taken so far to expand lecture rooms at the incubating site of the FNBSPH to accommodate increasing student numbers. She indicated the poor condition of existing student hostels and other facilities, noting that this poses safety challenges to students, staff and the general public.
On the Fodome Site project, the Director reported that work on the 12-year ongoing GETFund project was progressing sturdily however the contract was undergoing a rate-review which ought to be fast-tracked to enable the contractor to complete the work and hand-over within the next 12 months.
The Chairman of the University Council, Professor Kodzo Gavua spoke briefly on the conception of the idea to establish a university in the Volta Region and how UHAS began. He appealed to the Municipal Assembly to consider allocating part of its internally generated funds to support the University, stating that such a gesture would demonstrate the Municipal Assembly’s commitment towards the University. He also called on all stakeholders to advocate for the development of the Fodome Site and encouraged private investors and government agencies to invest in student accommodation for the use of the University.
Dr. Kenneth Ahorsu, Fodome Traditional Area’s Focal Person on Education, recounted the contributions of Volta intellectuals, both at home and abroad. towards the establishment of UHAS and pledged to continue making efforts towards the development of the Hohoe Campus.
Togbe Buami IX, the representative of the Paramount Chief of Gbi, Togbega Gabusu VII, commended all stakeholders for their commitment towards the development of the UHAS Hohoe Campus and urged them to persever towards achieving the goal and aspiration of operationalizing university work at the Fodome Site within the next twelve to twenty-four months.
Togbe Adze II, the representative of the Paramount Chief of Fodome, Togbega Gbedegbleme Akpatsa II, assured all stakeholders of the total cooperation of the Fodome Traditional Area in ensuring that the Fodome Site becomes a reality.
It was clear from all submissions that the campus has suffered too long a period of neglect and inactivity regarding infrastructural development and there was the need for all stakeholders to come on board in lobbying, advocacy and resource mobilization to ensure that the Hohoe Campus is developed to a level that gives the University the required presence in the Hohoe Municipality. The stakeholders appealed to government through the MCE to make tangible commitments at the main site of the campus at Fodome-Helu to enable university operations to commence at the site within a year or two.
It was agreed at the meeting that a substantive Joint UHAS Hohoe Campus Development Stakeholders Committee be put in place for a sustained commitment towards the development of the main site of the UHAS Hohoe Campus at Fodome-Helu. This will be a collaborative effort between the UHAS Management, the Government - being represented by the Hohoe Municipal Assembly, the Gbi Traditional Area and the Fodome Traditional Area. The main task of the committee will be to ensure that resources are sustainably committed to the UHAS Hohoe Campus project for a timely desired outcome.
Honourable Prosper Kumi, the Chief Executive Officer of Hohoe Municipal Assembly expressed his satisfaction with the fruitful deliberations and pledged to make a significant progress on infrastructural development on the UHAS Fodome Site so as to give his political party a campaign message in the 2028 electioneering window.
