About
The idea of a Basic School was born out of the need for the University of Health and Allied Sciences to attract and retain highly qualified staff from all over the country who in the past had not accepted offers to teach or work in UHAS for lack of quality basic schools in the municipality, according to them. Consequently, on 7 May 2019, Professor John Owusu Gyapong, then Vice Chancellor of the University, inaugurated a 10-member committee to lead the process of defining the structures necessary for the establishment of a University Basic School that would serve the University Community as well as the surrounding communities.
The initial membership of the Committee was as follows: Ms. Ruth X. Ayittey (Senior Architect), Mrs. Lucy B. Ofori-Ayeh (then Director, Academic Affairs), Dr. Emily Boakye-Yiadom (School of Medicine), Mrs. Victoria Kanda (Proprietor, Glory Kids Care Centre), Mr. Prosper Yevu (Deputy Director, HR-Municipal Education Office), Mr. Fidelis Anumu (Institute of Health Research). Mr. Edem Deikumah was the GAUA representative whilst Mr. Joshua Gadasu represented TEWU. Other members were Ms. Hawa Osman and Mr. Ofoe Gator Kugblenu, representatives of UTAG and FUSSAG respectively. The Committee was chaired by Professor Theophilus C. Fleischer (Dean, School of Pharmacy) and Mr. Dauda Basintale Iddrisu served as Secretary.
They were charged with the task of considering other innovative ideas and quality practices outside existing national standards to ensure that UHAS Basic School would be able to offer the best basic education in the Ho Municipality and beyond. After 20 months, the school was built and opened for operation on Tuesday January 26, 2021. On the first day, 42 boys and 42 girls were enrolled and continued to grow thenceforth. The first batch of staff 20 started the school.
