About the Event

The University of Health and Allied Sciences has at the 9th Congregation graduated its first batch of students from the School of Sports and Exercise Medicine and the first batch of students of Prostethics and Orthotics from the School of Allied Health Sciences on Saturday, November 30, 2024 at the Cedi Auditorium.

The bachelor degree programme in Orthotics and Prosthetics happened to be the first of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa. The University also recorded the graduation of its first two PhD students from the School of Graduate Studies.

In all, 1,519 undergraduate and post graduate students from the Universitys six schools were conferred with various degrees.

The Chairman of the University Council, Justice Victor J. M. Dotse, delivering his address said the University has produced over 8,805 well trained health professionals since its first congregation in 2016. A feat, he attributed to UHAS commitment to providing an academic environment in which students develop and attain the highest standards of clinical competencies and skills necessary for healthcare delivery in line with global standards.

He expressed pride in the Universitys alumni whose works continue to reflect the quality of teaching and mentoring they received through the world-class hardworking faculty and staff of the University. He appealed to the freshly-minted graduates to always aim at satisfying their clients by demonstrating the values that underpin their training at UHAS.

The Guest Speaker for the occasion, Dr. Mrs. Juliana Oye Ameh, CEO of The Trust Hospital, speaking on the theme Situating Quality Healthcare in National Development and Sustainability noted that the theme challenges the relationship between healthcare excellence and the nations aspirations towards sustainable development. She expressed the view that even though quality must be the hallmark for all sectors across the nation, the stakes are higher for healthcare delivery. Every Ghanaian regardless of their economic standing, deserves to receive safe, compassionate and effective care., she said.

Dr. Ameh pointed out that over eight million people from low-middle income countries lost their lives in 2015 to preventable diseases as a result of poor-quality healthcare which resulted in a total of US$6 trillion economic losses. She urged stakeholders to institutionalize quality healthcare at the national level by investing in healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to quality healthcare across rural and urban communities, leveraging on modern technologies, enhancing policy frameworks and facilitating the development of a highly skilled workforce.

It is through these deliberate actions that we will not only transform healthcare but also establish a culture of quality that permeates every sector, she added. Dr. Ameh also called on the graduates to at all times pursue excellence, promote transformation, commit to lifelong learning and embody integrity.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Lydia Aziato, in her state of the University address, among other things, stated the commissioning of a Natural Products Laboratory for the Institute of Traditional and Alternative Medicine (ITAM), a Research Centre for the School of Medicine (SOM) sponsored by Enterprise Computing Limited (ECL) and the launch  of a faculty - led innovative Health Literacy Board Games and Healthcare Apps on Friday, November 29, 2024.

She seized the opportunity to call on researchers and stakeholders across the globe to commit to advancing health education by partnering with UHAS. Professor Aziato also used the occasion to encourage the graduates to stay curious and never cease learning. She also advised them to stay abreast with trending innovations in their various fields and to always be guided by the UHAS ethos and values of excellence, integrity, innovations and service and care.

The colourful ceremony had two sessions with Miss Irene Atadika of the Fred N.
