Office of International Programmes
The Office of International Programmes (OIP) was established in 2015, approximately four years after the establishment of the University of Health and Allied Sciences. The Office was created in response to the thinking, and justifiably so, that globalization and international collaborations should be seen as pivots in augmenting the higher education enterprise in the 21st century. Indeed, this thinking has proved valuable, for UHAS has immensely benefited from the international collaborations it has forged during the period.
In line with its mandate, OIP coordinates, facilitates and manages activities related to all international students who have enrolled in UHAS, as well as faculty members and other senior members who are not Ghanaians. OIP has therefore, come to serve as an important organ of UHAS, bridging the gap between the University and the international community.
The Office of International Programmes at UHAS wishes you a hearty welcome. Situated in Ghana's beautiful Volta Region, UHAS is the only public university in Ghana solely focused on training health professionals and practitioners to meet the health needs of people both locally and globally.
OIP coordinates the affairs of our international clients — students, faculty, researchers, partners and projects. We stand as the face of the University in assisting you professionally and ethically by liaising between UHAS and our foreign clients.

1. Academics without Borders, Canada
UHAS and Academics Without Borders, a Canadian bilingual NGO, entered into an MoU in January 2018 to support developing countries to develop and expand institutions of higher education by sending volunteers to work on projects in those institutions.
2. University of Basel, Switzerland
University of Health and Allied Sciences has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Institute of Nursing Science, University of Basel to promote exchange and cooperation and to foster global development and dissemination of nursing science. The partner institution is UHAS School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONAM). Collaborative effort in the areas of scientific research, educational activities and initiatives to advance and enhance academic pursuits in nursing shall be undertaken under this partnership. Funding for proposed collaborative endeavours in research and education are to be sought through proposals jointly developed and submitted to domestic and international funding sources. This agreement was signed to foster joint research grant applications and other joint activities. Two UHAS faculty members were invited to Basel following the signing of the agreement.
3. Campbell University, U.S.A.
Campbell University, North Carolina, U.S.A. primarily collaborates with the UHAS School of Public Health in the area of student exchange, students and faculty exchanges, field visits and outreach programmes by students of Campbell and UHAS.
4. DICLE University, Turkey
Dicle University and UHAS have agreed to cooperate for the exchange of students and/or staff in the context of the Erasmus+ programme. Through this agreement, UHAS will soon be a named partner university on the Erasmus+ programme.
5. Georgetown University, U.S.A.
Georgetown University signed an MoU with UHAS to foster student exchange between the two institutions. Every year, between six to eight students in the Master of Science in Global Health programme come to UHAS for a six to 12-week Fall Internship program. UHAS in turn assigns a preceptor who supervises the students' research work.
6. University Grenoble Alpes, France
In seeking to promote the development and growth of exchanges, and academic, scientific and cultural activities, University of Grenoble Alpes and UHAS jointly agreed to promote exchanges of university personnel (students, lecturers and administrators) to develop teaching, research and project activities and to promote joint publications.
7. . University of Illinois Springfield, U.S.A.
University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) has entered into a memorandum of understanding with University of Health and Allied Sciences to explore the areas of academic research. UIS collaborates with UHAS School of Public Health in this regard.
8. York University, Toronto, Canada
York University in Toronto, Canada has signed an MOU with UHAS to promote international education and cooperation. The agreement is specifically with the School of Nursing and Midwifery to promote faculty and student exchange. Some faculty from SONAM is expected to undergo training at York soon. York University also sends its Global Health Practicum students to the UHAS School of Public Health, where UHAS staff members supervise them to conduct field research.
9. Zurich University of Applied Sciences
The Zurich University Applied Sciences (ZHAW), represented by the school of Health Sciences, Institute of Nursing and the University of Health and Allied Sciences, represented by the Fred Binka School of Public Health and the School of Nursing and Midwifery has signed an MOU based on the principle of reciprocity and expresses the interest of both parties in working together in the belief that the research and educational processes at both institutions will be enhanced and that mutual understanding between their respective faculty and students will be increased by the establishment of such programs. The collaboration is focused on exchange of academic information and materials, exchange of faculty, exchange of students (undergraduate and/or graduate).
10. DY Patil, Deemed to be University
D Y Patil, Deemed to be university, an educational entity (hereinafter referred to as “DYPU”), and the University of Health and Allied Sciences, a public university established under the laws of the Republic of Ghana (hereinafter referred to as “UHAS”) express the intention to establish a cooperative relationship fostering engagement between the two organizations with respect to the various events and activities for academic and related collaboration in furtherance of their respective mission.
11. UMass Chan Medical School, University of Massachusetts, USA
UHAS and UMass Chan desire, through a cooperative relationship, to engage in joint educational programs and research projects in support of their respective missions and mandate. This MOU provides the foundation and framework for particular projects that may be developed by academic and administrative units from the two institutions of parties for the mutual benefits of the parties. 12. American Institute for Healthcare Quality, USA.
UHAS and AIHQ desire to establish certain cooperative Programmes beneficial to the respective institutions and to promote the development of joint studies, research and training activities, and other related of mutual interest.
13. University of Southampton, UK
UOS and UHAS express the intention to develop academic exchanges and cooperation in teaching and research in furtherance of the advancement and dissemination of knowledge and learning. This collaboration focuses on factors such as exchange of scientific, academic, and technical information and appropriate academic materials.
14. Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria
The collaboration between OAU and UHAS is to strengthening of Postgraduate (PG) Programmes between the various departments of the faculty Pharmacy (FOP) and College of Health Sciences (CHS) in OAU and those of the School of Pharmacy (SOP), Medicine (SOM), Nursing and Midwifery (SONAM), Allied Health Sciences (SAHS) and Public Health (SPH), and Institute of Health Research (IHR) of UHAS.
15. University Medical Center Groningen, Netherlands
In seeking to promote the development and growth of exchanges, and academic, scientific and cultural activities, University Medical Center Groningen and UHAS jointly agreed to promote exchange of Bachelor students, Supervision of PhD Students and to promote joint application for grants.
16. University of Kent, UK
Kent and UHAS are engaged in staff exchange and the delivery of guest lectures with the aim of furthering academic and research collaboration in fields including community health, wellbeing and allied sciences. Each institution will be responsible for its own costs and expenses incurred in relation to this activity unless otherwise agreed in writing.
17. Utica University, USA
The purpose of this SEA is to promote arid expand international understanding, development, and friendship as well as stimulate and support educational, professional and intercultural activities and projects among students and staff of the two institutions (Utica University and the University of Health and Allied Sciences hereinafter referred to as Utica and the University of Health and Allied Sciences). This SEA sets forth and describes general and specific aspects of the agreement, with the understanding that on the basis of a regular review of activities, the document in both its general and specific content may be revised with the mutual consent of Utica and the University of Health and Allied Sciences individually referred to as a “Party” and collectively as “Parties”.
18. I2C Lab Corp, USA
The Collaboration between UHAS and I2C Lab is focused on mentorship for UHAS students in research, support in library and e-learning resources, provision of textbooks, computers, and other accessories to enable students to access I2C Lab. It also aims at fostering commitment to sponsor at least two students per academic year with USD 1,000.00 each. Two University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) students have been awarded the i2C Lab Corp scholarship worth $1000 each to cover their tuition and research expenses.
19. University of Southampton, UK
This MoU is focused on exchange of scientific, academic, and technical information and appropriate academic materials and other information of mutual interest.
20. New York University, USA
Joint educational, cultural and research activities, exchange of faculty members and advanced graduate students for research lectures and discussions are some of the objectives the MoU between New York University and UHAS seeks to foster and establish.
21. Sivas Cumhuriyet University (Erasmus + Programme Inter-institutional Agreement), Turkey
UHAS and Sivas Cumhuriyet University have agreed to cooperate for the exchange of students and / or staff in the context of the Erasmus+ programme.
22. University of Eastern Finland, Finland
This collaboration is focused on changing material and know-how, faculty and student mobility, research proposal writing and joint research activities or other related activities.
Study Abroad Programmes
The Office of International Programmes organises information sessions for all students of UHAS. The University has built strong relations with Campus France of the French Embassy and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Representatives from these institutions, in collaboration with OIP, organise information sessions on study, research and funding opportunities in various countries. OIP is working at instituting these as annual events.
OIP fosters academic exchanges between UHAS and other institutions here in Ghana and abroad. In the last couple of years, we have formed very concrete relationships with a number of institutions.
Leeds Beckett University Masters in Public Health (Health Promotion)
The Leeds Beckett University in the UK offers a part-time Master's degree in Public Health Promotion, taught at the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho. The programme is suitable for anyone making contribution to public health promotion in the widest sense, the course emphasizes the role of the public health practitioner in tackling the social determinants of health. The programme is largely taught by Leeds Beckett academic staff. Attendance is in blocks of two weeks, five times across two years, followed by a period of study for dissertation. Most students offering the programme are funded by the Commonwealth Scholarship.
The University recognises that international student exchange programmes are critical for creating educational opportunities that help build bridges of understanding among students from diverse countries. It therefore places utmost importance on these activities. OIP therefore fosters collaborations with our international partners in this regard. Currently, the University engages in active student exchanges with the following institutions:
University of Birmingham
Ms. Sharon Darkwa came on a six-week attachment to the Centre for Malaria Research at the Institute of Health Research, UHAS. While here, she carried out field work under the RTS,S malaria vaccine study and was supervised by Professor Evelyn Ansah. This research went towards her thesis entitled: “Willingness to pay for the RTS,S malaria vaccine, and other routine immunisations in the Volta region, Ghana: A qualitative exploratory study.”
Campbell University, U.S.A.
Campbell University cooperates with UHAS School of Public Health in the area of student exchange. The first batch of students undertook their practicum session at the UHAS School of Public Health in May 2019. About their experiences at UHAS, the faculty and students wrote: "We wish to express our satisfaction with the hospitality and training provided by University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) during our study abroad trip in May 2019. UHAS is truly a destination of choice for practicum and student experience."
Georgetown University, U.S.A.
So far, two batches of Masters students from Georgetown University have undertaken their practicum at UHAS. They were supervised by Professors from the Institute of Health Research.
Global Korean Nursing Foundation (GKNF)/SONAM Student Exchange Programme
UHAS School of Nursing and Midwifery and students from the Global Korean Nursing Foundation (GKNF), an organisation of Nursing students from all over Korea, have engaged in joint activities to promote nursing services in selected communities in the Volta Region. University of Illinois Springfield, U.S.A.
Global Health students of the University of Illinois Springfield, under the supervision of selected faculty from the UHAS School of Public Health undertake their field practicum in Hohoe municipality. The first batch of students completed a six-week practicum in May 2019.
York University, Toronto, Canada
The first batch of exchange students from York University, Canada, did their field practicum at the UHAS School of Public Health in January 2020.
Mr. Afaya Agani, an Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Nursing, School of Nursing and Midwifery, is currently in South Korea for his Doctoral programme. He is taking the compulsory Korean Language course at Chonnam National University for a year before he proceeds with his Ph.D. at Yonsei University in August 2020. His report indicates he's making progress and faring well.
Mr. Kennedy Konlan, an Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Public Health Nursing, School of Nursing and Midwifery, is currently in South Korea preparing towards his Doctoral programme. He is taking the compulsory one-year Korean Language course at Chonnam National University. He starts his Ph.D. programme in Nursing at Yonsei University in August 2020.
Mr. Prince Appiah Kubi, from UHAS School of Public Health is currently a Doctoral Student at the Asian Institute for Bioethics and Health Law, Yonsei University. His area of specialization is Health Law and Ethics. His supervisor is Professor Kim So Yoon.
Mr. Eric Osei, from UHAS School of Public Health, is currently undergoing his doctoral studies in Clinical Epidemiology at the Graduate School of Public Health, Yonsei University. Professor Hyeon Chang Kim is his mentor. He appreciates the opportunity to study in South Korea on the Korean Government Scholarship programme.
