- STANBIC BANK DONATES TECHNOLOGY EQUIPMENT TO UHAS
The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) received a significant boost to its teaching and learning technology infrastructure on Wednesday, May 7, 2025 as Stanbic Bank donated equipment valued at over GH₵300,000.00 at a brief donation ceremony held on the Main campus of the University.
UHAS is the only state university in Ghana dedicated solely to the training of healthcare professionals. Since its inception, the University has kept faith with its core mandate of solely offering healthcare training. However, due to infrastructural and educational materials deficit, the University is unable to match the increasing number of students which has moved from the initial 154 in 2012 to over 10,000 currently. Since effective healthcare training is a heavy budget endeavour and equally a shared responsibility involving varied stakeholders, University Management has been making appeals for support.
The gesture of Stanbic Bank was a respond to an appeal made by the Dean of UHAS School of Medicine, Professor Yaw Asante Awuku, in support of the School’s vision of creating virtual classrooms that allow for remote delivery of lectures, laboratory skills training, clinical examinations, among others. By the donation, Stanbic Bank has become a key stakeholder of the School and the University. UHAS Management would take steps to make the relationship mutually beneficial.
The items donated include 10 laptop computers, 20 electronic tablets, two 85-inch television sets and one high-quality video camera, all valued at over GH₵300,000.00. These are equipment that will significantly enhance the University’s ability to deliver modern education by enabling UHAS students to acquire knowledge from experts globally.
The Head of Personal Banking at Stanbic Bank, Mr. Harry Opoku Agyemang, who led the delegation, emphasized the Bank's commitment to national development beyond its role as a financial institution. ‘We are not just a financial institution. We are also very committed to national development.’, Mr. Agyemang stated. He highlighted the importance of technology in modern education, stating that as the world was moving away from traditional classroom learning environments, technology was no longer a luxury but rather a necessity, hence their intervention.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Lydia Aziato thanked Stanbic Bank for their exemplary support. She also appreciated all who played roles in making sure that UHAS caught the attention of Stanbic Bank in this regard. Professor Aziato intimated that in order to enhance its focus on comprehensive health education, UHAS was preparing to introduce new programmes in Optometry and Sonography in the next academic year. She enumerated some challenges the University is facing and asked for further support from Stanbic Bank.
The Dean of UHAS School of Medicine, Professor Yaw Awuku, expressed profound appreciation to Stanbic Bank for the donation and noted that ‘We are looking at how we can digitize a lot of the things that we do. We can now have experts in the USA and other parts of the world deliver specialized training to our students right here in Ghana.’
Despite facing significant resource constraints, UHAS has established an impressive track record of excellence in healthcare education in Ghana and beyond. In 2022 for example, the national best Nursing, Midwifery and Pharmacy students at the respective licentiate examinations were UHAS graduates. The 2023 National Best Nurse was also a UHAS Alumnus. It is very rare to have three national level awards coming from the same institution, which shows that UHAS continues to grow and fulfill its vital mandate of training Ghana's future healthcare professionals and collaborating with institutions like Stanbic Bank represents a crucial support for its development and sustainability.
Stanbic Bank is an organization that looks beyond financial outcomes to create more values socially, economically and environmentally. The Bank leverages on strategic footprints and long-standing relationships to connect with key stakeholders and unlock new opportunities in Ghana and beyond.
Also present at the ceremony were the Registrar, Miss Yaa Amankwaa Opuni, Director of Academic Affairs, Dr. Cedric Dorkenoo and other staff of the University.
