MES, the mother company of MES Equipment & MES Chemical Limited have demonstrated the organization’s commitment to advancing health education and scientific research with a significant donation to the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS). MES is currently supporting the UHAS School of Pharmacy (UHAS SOP) to establish a post graduate research laboratory for which about 70,000 Ghana Cedis has so far been provided. MES has also provided a minus 30°C freezer worth about 20,000 US Dollars to service the laboratory and scholarship for one brilliant but needy student.
While installation work on the laboratory is steadily progressing, MES has handed over the minus 30°C freezer and a cheque for the scholarship to the University in a brief ceremony at UHAS SOP on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.
The Executive Sales Promoter, Ms. Eva Darko-Appiah who presented the items on behalf of MES related that the gesture forms part of the organization’s corporate social responsibility. She said, ’We got to know a lot about your students at the White Coat Ceremony; what they’ve achieved and what they hope to achieve in future. And we thought, why not invest in their future?’
On his part, the Dean of UHAS SOP, Professor Kwame Ohene Buabeng, said the laboratory was almost complete and would soon be commissioned for use. Professor Buabeng declared in excitement that ‘The minus 30°C freezer is very important, especially for the kind of research works expected of postgraduate Biomedical research students. This means the lab will not only serve students of School of Pharmacy. Students from School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences and School of Allied Health Sciences will also find it extremely useful.’
The Registrar, Ms. Yaa Amankwaa Opuni received the donations on behalf of the University Management. In her remarks, she expressed the appreciation of Management to MES. She emphasized that ‘Universities cannot advance on government resources alone. We deeply appreciate this noble gesture and look forward to more opportunities for collaboration.’ Ms. Opuni assured the donors that the equipment would be used for their intended purpose and be well maintained.
The scholarship, which was a response to a special request from the University Management, went to Ms. Jacintha Sefakor Ama Hadzi, a level 200 student of Health Information at the UHAS Fred N. Binka School of Public Health. Her academic fees and accommodation fees would be paid by MES for the rest of her undergraduate academic programme in UHAS. Ms Hadzi is the daughter of Madam Lawrencia Doh, a Junior Staff (Cleaner) of the University. Ms. Doh received a cheque of 5,000 Ghana Cedis being the academic and accommodation fees for the current academic year on behalf of her daughter. She expressed a profound appreciation to the Management of MES for the immense financial support. She said, among other things, that ‘I want to thank you for taking this financial burden off my shoulders. I’m truly grateful. God bless you.’
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Lydia Aziato, added her voice to that of the Registrar and the Dean of UHAS SOP in expressing gratitude to MES. She was optimistic that the collaboration would be a lasting one with mutual benefits to both the University and MES.
Also present at the event were the Dean of School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences, Professor Richard Harry Asmah, Faculty and Staff of the University.
The partnership between MES and UHAS demonstrates the value of industry support in higher education, strengthening research capabilities, supporting students and building a future of excellence in health sciences.
