Overview
The school of nursing and midwifery (SONAM) was established in 2011/2012 academic year as one of the foundations Schools of the University of Health and Allied Sciences. The School of Nursing and Midwifery is poised to change the face of Nursing and Midwifery in Ghana by training Nurses and Midwives to be competent practitioners, scholars and confident leaders in the Nursing profession. To achieve this, the school designed curricular that has pout clinical practice in the Centre of the preparation of Nurses and Midwives, to prepare students to be able to synthesize knowledge, scientific evidence and innovative technology to guide the Nursing practice and also become leaders, who must influence and guide the directions of actions, opinions and attitude of others, manage the structure and process of the care environment, participate in the formulation of healthcare policies, develop and implement professional standards of Nursing in Ghana.
The school of nursing and midwifery has a four-year bachelor degree programme that seeks to contribute to developing Nursing and Midwifery to become a discipline through its professional practice and scholarly based programmes.
Areas of specialization in our bachelor programmes are:
• Nursing
• Midwifery
• Public Health Nursing
• Health Service Administration (SONAM incubating the programme)
The programmes will provide graduates with a clinical site-based learning experiences that will assist students to develop clinical skills that will enable them to provide quality and safe patient care in both acute care facility and in the communities.
The Bachelor of Nursing programme seeks to equip Nursing students to be able to:
• Develop problem solving and self-directed learning skills
• Acquire critical thinking skills to address clients’ problems
• Identify research problems from clinical practice settings
• Use scholarly knowledge to inform policy that will improve Nursing practice in Ghana and internationally.
The Bachelor of Midwifery programmes also seeks to equip Midwifery students to:
• Develop problem solving and self-directed learning skills
• Acquire critical thinking skills to address mother and newborn child’s problem during pregnancy and delivery
• Develop professional skills that will enable them safely care for mother and child through pregnancy and delivery
• Identify research problems from clinical practice for investigation
• Use scholarly knowledge to inform policy that will include midwifery practice in Ghana and Internationally.
The Bachelor of Public Health programme seeks to equip the Public Health Nursing students to:
• Develop problem solving and self-directed learning skills
• Acquire critical thinking skills to address Public Health and Environmental Health issues and problems in the communities
• Identify research problems from clinical practice for investigation and implementation
• Use scholarly knowledge to inform policy that will improve the health of people in Ghana and internationally.
In addition, the school of Nursing and Midwifery has a two-year Master of Philosophy programmes currently running:
• MPhil in Nursing
• MPhil in Midwifery
Currently, the school has three Departments:
• Department of Nursing
• Department of Midwifery
• Department of Public Health Nursing
The school also has a sandwich programme that runs for sixteen (16) weeks a year with eight (8) weeks lectures and eight (8) weeks clinical practicum; aimed at developing the knowledge based and clinical skills of auxiliary nurses working in the rural communities of the country. These groups of students enter the university at level 200 through a six (6) weeks access course. This body of students is made up of healthcare assistants(clinical), community health nurses and community health midwives. These students will also graduate with bachelor’s degrees in nursing, Midwifery and Public Health Nursing, after which they will be prepared to write the professional licensure examination.

I am delighted to welcome you to the largest School of Nursing and Midwifery in the subregion. Our school is renowned for its excellence in nursing and midwifery education, research, and practice.
At the School of Nursing and Midwifery, UHAS, we pride ourselves on providing a world-class education that prepares our students for successful careers in nursing and midwifery. Our state-of-the-art simulation Centre, the largest in the subregion, provides our students with hands-on training and experience in a realistic and controlled environment.
We offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in nursing, midwifery, and public health nursing designed to meet the needs of healthcare systems in Ghana and beyond. Our programmes are taught by experienced faculty who are experts in their fields, and our curriculum is designed to equip our students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to provide high-quality patient care.
My expectation of the school is to become the largest and most esteemed School of Nursing and Midwifery in West Africa that promotes quality and innovative teaching and learning, cutting-edge research, active stakeholder engagement while promoting community service, and collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches to holistic health care delivery.

PROFESSOR PETER ADATARA (PhD, MPhil, MSc, MBA, BSc, RN)
Associate Professor, Dean of School of Nursing and Midwifery
Professor Peter Adatara is the Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, UHAS. Prior to his appointment, he was Head of the Department of Nursing, School of Nursing and Midwifery and an associate professor of Nursing. He is the first male nurse in Ghana to attain the rank of associate professor.
He had his Diploma in Registered General Nursing (RGN) education at the Bolgatanga Nurses Training College and later pursued a BSc in Nursing and MPhil in Health Service Management at the University of Ghana. He holds PhD in Nursing Science from Nelson Mandela University, South Africa. He has recently graduated from the University of Southampton, UK, with MSc in Gerontology. He holds professional diplomas in Business administration and Human Resource Management from the Institute of Commercial Management, UK.
Professor Adatara has rich and varied work experience prior to joining the University of Health and Allied Sciences. He worked as a lecturer at Faculty of Medical Sciences, Presbyterian University College, Ghana before Joining University of Health and Allied Sciences in 2013. He has also worked in various institutions within the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Services in various capacities as a General Nurse, Nurse Tutor and a Clinical Coordinator. Before joining academia, he worked as a Medical Supervisor, Danone Baby Nutrition and a Medical Supervisor, Projects Abroad, Ghana.
His areas of research interest include maternal and child health, health policy and systems research, health service management and leadership, non-communicable diseases, clinical nursing and nursing education, nursing informatics and geriatric nursing. He has over forty-five publications in peer reviewed journals.
Professor Adatara employs an active learning approach that integrates technology tools and resources to enhance student engagement through activities like group discussions, problem-solving tasks, and hands-on experiences. Additionally, he has actively contributed to curriculum development and design for undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
