Office of the Pro Vice Chancellor

The Office of the Pro-Vice Chancellor is the core academic setup of the University, generally responsible for the management of the academic functions of the University. The focus of the Office includes: coordinating strategies for developing and implementing academic programmes of various Schools and Departments within the University; providing academic leadership to Deans and Heads of Departments; Overseeing the processes of accreditation of programmes as established by the University; ensuring efficient development, coordination and smooth running of academic facilities and policies for teaching and learning.

The Office is overseen by the Pro-Vice Chancellor. The Pro-Vice Chancellor has made phenomenal efforts in providing leadership with regard to teaching and learning in the fulfilment of the strategic direction of the University.

Professor Frank Edwin

Pro Vice-Chancellor, University of Health and Allied Sciences.

Professor Frank Edwin serves as the Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS). In this role, he oversees academic and strategic initiatives aimed at fostering excellence in health education and research while strengthening UHAS’s global partnerships and institutional rankings.

An accomplished cardiothoracic surgeon and educator, Professor Edwin brings decades of experience in clinical care, academic leadership, and medical research. He is a graduate of the University of Ghana Medical School and has completed specialized training in pediatric and congenital heart surgery. Professor Edwin has held several prominent academic and leadership positions.

Prior to his current role, he served as the Dean of the School of Medicine at UHAS, where he spearheaded initiatives that strengthened academic programs and research as well as postgraduate training in surgery at the Ho Teaching Hospital. His efforts have contributed to significant milestones, such as securing accreditation for postgraduate surgical training and expanding cardiovascular care services in Ghana. As the founding Head of the Cardiothoracic Centre at the Ho Teaching Hospital, he has championed life-saving cardiac care and collaborative research including a culturally adapted mHealth platform for management of hypertension in Ghana.

He is an active member of leading professional organizations, including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons of North America and the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Global Council on Education for Congenital Heart Surgery, is Associate Chair of the World University for Pediatric & Congenital Heart Surgery, and Associate Editor of the World Journal for Pediatric & Congenital Heart Surgery.

With a robust academic portfolio, Professor Edwin has authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and has been a key contributor to global and regional conferences. Professor Edwin serves as the President of the African Society for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery and the 2nd Vice President of the World Society for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery.

He is committed to advancing UHAS as a center of excellence in health sciences education and research. In his capacity as Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Edwin is dedicated to promoting the mission of UHAS to provide quality education, research, and healthcare that improve health outcomes and quality of life. His strategic vision includes fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, leveraging innovation, and enhancing UHAS’s global rankings, particularly in Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being).
