Overview
The main purpose of the Works and Physical Development Directorate’s is the strategic planning, development, alteration and operation of the Physical Estate and Buildings of the University. The Directorate also provides support to academic activities of the University and also performs various professional services on behalf of the University. It may also undertake such services, as the case may be, for other clients within the standards, guidelines and in the interest of the University.
We are a technically advanced, service-oriented infrastructure development and maintenance directorate that pursues the goal of collective excellence through personal and collaborative efforts with other University Departments for institutional development.
Teamwork is emphasized to promote a high-quality physical environment for teaching and learning in the University through professional services.
The networked leadership model where each individual in the directorate contributes technical, management and leadership skills to the team.
All professional staff have the opportunity to develop and receive recognition as leaders within their fields of expertise.
Thorough review processes are carried out efficiently and responsively, to ensure positive relations between students and staff.
Participation in decision-making is widespread and expanding.
Developmental opportunities including in-house training, cross training and mentoring are part of a total program of individual skills growth for each technical or administrative staff.
Advanced technology is applied to improve delivery of new infrastructure while reducing costs.
The Physical Development Unit is responsible for Planning, designing, and development of the University infrastructural facilities and services. The Unit’s services as described above covers mainly the following construction disciplines: Architectural, Planning, Environmental, Structural, Geotechnical, Electrical & Mechanical, Quantity Surveying and Construction Supervision.
The Unit consists of Three (3) Divisions thus, the Architectural, Quantity Surveying and Engineering divisions.
The Director
ARC. RUTH XOLADEM AYITTEY
Arc. Ruth Xoladem Ayittey was appointed to the position of Director of Works and Physical Development at UHAS, effective August 1, 2022. She comes with over 20 years’ experience, and has been in Senior Member positions at UHAS since 2016. Until her appointment as Director, she was Senior Architect and Head of Physical Development at UHAS.
Education
Arc. Ayittey has degrees in design, architecture and construction management, with advanced technical competencies in the fields of architecture, construction, procurement and project management, including expertise in top industry software.
Experience
She brought her skills to bear in shaping and branding the UHAS environment and also providing the most conducive learning environment for students and the various professionals in the health sector. She also chairs or serves on numerous University committees and is a member of the Architects’ Registration Council, the Ghana Institute of Architects, and Project Management Institute.
Prior to UHAS, Arc. Ayittey served as an Assistant Architect with Architectural Design Partnership in Accra, also as a registered Architect with Associated Consultants; and later partnered with another architect as a director at Diseno Cisne, an architectural firm in Accra. She is also an architectural engineer with UNOPS, West Africa.
In her over-20 years of working experience, she has worked on various urban and community development schemes in all the ten regions of Ghana and the West Africa sub-region as an architect and a project manager. She is very passionate about and researches on Sustainable Architecture for underprivileged communities..
