Announcement – SSEM-UHAS Twelve-Week Professional Practice Certificate Course (PPCC)
INTRODUCTION
The prevalence of lifestyle ailments and occupational stress due to homo-sedentrious lifestyle is fast becoming a Public Health concern of epidemic dimensions. The above concerns made the World Health Organization (WHO) the global health regulatory organization to recognize Exercise as Medicine to promote non-pharmaceutical preventive and restorative health. This has increased the population of individuals seeking to keep fit and adhere to Exercise as Medicine.
Following from this development, numerous health fitness centres have been established with the intention of training auxiliary personnel for the Sports and Exercise Medicine ecosystem. In addition, observation shows that the industry specifically lacks professionally trained fitness instructors and managers. This constitutes the justification for offering this Professional Practice Certificate Course (PPCC) at the School of Sports and Exercise Medicine, University of Health and Allied Sciences (SSEM-UHAS).
PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES
By the end of training, participants should be able to:
• Evaluate the fitness status of clients• Recommend appropriate management techniques and make necessary referrals
• Demonstrate technical competency in managing a health fitness centre
• Create healthy marketing tactics for group exercise programme
• Provide basic advice to clients on lifestyle induced ailments and fad diets
• Apply Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type (FITT) guidelines for Exercise Prescription
• Prescribe and administer Exercise in adequate dosages
• Apply the appropriate exercise modes and protocols for lifestyle conditions management
• Manage clients with homo-sedentrious lifestyle health issues

MODULE 9: Principles and Techniques of Exercise Prescription
MODULE 10: Choreography, Music and Cueing
MODULE 11: Injury Prevention and Emergency Procedures
MODULE 12: Legal Issues and Professional Responsibilities
Course Duration:
12 (twelve) weeks
1st Cohort Period:
April 19 to June 22, 2024
Mode of Delivery:
Blended (Online and In-Person)
Certification and Indexing:
A certificate, jointly signed by the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) and National Sports Authority Ghana, shall be issued to students who successfully complete the course.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
WASSCE Applicants:
Applicants must have obtained credits (at least Grade C6 in WASSCE) in the following core subjects: Mathematics, English, Integrated Science, and Social Studies. In addition, applicants must have obtained one (1) credit pass each in three of the following (A1-C6 in WASSCE) in Physics, Biology, and Chemistry or Elective Mathematics.
SSSCE Applicants:
Applicants with SSSCE must have obtained credits in Mathematics, English, Integrated Science, and Social Studies. In addition, applicants must have obtained one (1) credit pass each in any of the following, (A–D in SSSCE) Physics, Biology, and Chemistry or Elective Mathematics.
International Applicants and Ghanaians with External Educational Credentials:
Credentials acceptable for admission include the following:• International Baccalaureate (IB)
• GCE (Cambridge) ‘O’ and ‘A’ Levels (A-D)
• IGSCE (Cambridge) ‘O’ and ‘A’ Levels (A-D)
• American High School Grade – Grades 12 & 13 examinations
• Other external qualifications which have equivalences to the WASSCE and the GCE (A Levels)
• Prospective applicants with any of the above qualifications would have to submit their certificates to the Ghana Tertiary Education (GTEC) for verification and certification before gaining admission to the programme.
Application Fees:
a. Two hundred and twenty cedis (GH220.00) for Ghanaian Applicantsb. Forty US dollars ($40) for Foreign Applicants
Course Fees:
a. Ghanaian Applicants shall pay a Tuition, Certification and Indexing Fee of Three thousand, one-hundred cedis (GH3,100) only (on instalment basis).b. Foreign Applicants shall pay a Tuition, Certification and Indexing Fee of Six hundred US dollars ($600) only.
