Overview
The School of Pharmacy (SOP) is one of the eight (8) schools of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS). The School started the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program in 2016 with thirty-one (31) students. The School now has a student population of over four Hundred (400), distributed between levels 100 to 600. The School has graduated three (3) batches of Doctors of Pharmacy. SOP currently has a total of forty-five (45) staff which consist of Professors, an Associate Professor, Senior Lecturers, Lecturers, Pharmacists, Laboratory and other Supporting staff.
The SOP Faculty are actively involved in teaching, research and consultancy works in Ghana and beyond. SOP Faculty have won grants from a number of organizations and agencies including the International Foundation for Science (IFS), Seeding LABS, UK Department of Health and Social Care, International Brain Research Organisation (IBRO), International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS), Royal Society of Chemistry among others for various research projects.
Operating from the main campus of the University, SOP has six (6) Academic Departments; namely, Pharmacy Practice, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy and Herbal Medicine, and Pharmaceutical Microbiology. Laboratory sections are managed by the School using multi-purpose laboratories of the University at the Southern Campus and the main Campus. The Trafalgar Campus is situated within the Ho Teaching Hospital where students undertake experiential learning.
The School has recently rolled out graduate programmes including MSc Pharmaceutical Chemistry, MPhil/PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, Pharmacology, and Toxicology), and PhD. Accreditation has also been obtained to run Graduate programmes in Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Pharmaceutics which would commence in 2025/26 Academic year.
The School’s experiential training programmes comprises Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE), Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE), and Intra-Semester Practicum, providing students with real-life active learning experiences and in-depth exposure to various pharmacy settings. The Faculty of SOP is highly focused on student success and are dedicated to their training in the classroom and clinical settings to ensure optimal learning outcomes for the students. SOP believes in diversity and inclusivity and so our doors are open to staff and students from various backgrounds and nationalities.
Deans Welcome Address
I welcome you to the School of Pharmacy (SOP) of the University of Health and Allied Sciences. The SOP which started in 2016 has made great strides and has recorded wonderful achievements in the 8 years of its existence. The School since its inception has attracted, retain and trained diverse and excellent students. SOP of UHAS remain student-focused and also promote student success by providing high-quality pharmacy education, using modern pedagogical approaches, technology, and innovation, and focusing on building the knowledge and skills of our students to be patient centered, and also work in collaborative teams to solve health and medication related problems for individuals and communities/the public.
The School also encourages collaborative research between departments in and outside the School, the country and beyond, in the areas of drug discovery and development, drug quality evaluation and patient safety, drug therapy optimization, antimicrobial resistance containment including antimicrobial stewardship among others. SOP has collaboration with FDA for training in Pharmacovigilance and also University of Eastern Finland for student’s exchange.
Professor Kwame Ohene Buabeng

The Dean of the School of Pharmacy, Professor Kwame Ohene Buabeng is a Clinical Pharmacologist and Professor of Pharmacy Practice. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana, Master’s degree in Clinical Pharmacology from University of Aberdeen, Scotland, UK, and a PhD in Pharmacy (Social Pharmacy- Drug Utilisation and Health Systems Research) from the University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio, Finland. The Dean also has Certificate in Public Health Science, Research Design, and Ethics from the Nordic School of Public Health, Gothenburg, Sweden. Dean Kwame Ohene Buabeng is a Fellow of the Ghana College of Pharmacists, where he also serves as the Vice President of the College, and Head of the Division of Pharmaceutical Care. He is also a Fellow of the West Africa Postgraduate of Pharmacists.
The Dean of SOP, UHAS is Deputy Chair of the Multi-stakeholder, Multi-sectoral Antimicrobial Resistance Policy Platform, and Technical Working Group Lead on Antimicrobial Stewardship in Ghana. He is also Chair of the Global Health Security Agenda with Focus on Antimicrobial Resistance, and Consultant for TEACH AMS ECHO, a collaborative initiative to strengthen capacity of health professionals on Antimicrobial Stewardship in Ghana, between the University of New Mexico, America Society of Clinical Microbiology, Pfizer and the Ministry of Health, Ghana. He is a Member and reviewer for European Society of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID).
His research interest is in the Prevention and Pharmacotherapy of Cardio-Metabolic Disorders and Infectious Diseases. He has published extensively in these areas, and also reviews for refereed journals including European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, BMJ open, Plos One, Hospital Pharmacy, BMC Public Health; Malaria Journal among others. Dean Kwame Ohene Buabeng has consulted for WHO to develop educational materials for the training of health managers and policy makers on strategies to contain antimicrobial resistance, including antimicrobial stewardship. He is a member of the expert committee for the development and review of National Standards Treatment Guidelines in Ghana, and also a Member of the Steering Committee of Health Technology Assessment, Ghana.
